Honored Mentor
Stephen W. Crane
DVM, DACVS
Dr. Steve Crane was the founding Head of the Department of Companion Animals and Special Species (now Clinical Sciences) at NC State CVM. Steve recruited the first cohort of ACVS surgeons and established an environment where faculty, house officers, and students could thrive. He advocated for the active involvement of faculty in clinical teaching and the creation of rigorous residency and internship programs. At a time when the generalist surgeon was the norm, he envisioned a future where specialized surgical faculty would develop pioneering diagnostic methods and surgical treatment and elevate the standard of care. He created a framework for research success that included departmental support of research technicians and dedicated time for faculty research.

What truly distinguishes Steve as a mentor is his broader understanding of the word “mentor.” He provided the resources and encouragement necessary for new programs to flourish, ensuring that mentorship became a shared, reciprocal experience across the department. His influence shaped not only the surgical faculty and trainees with whom he interacted but all those who have since worked and trained at NC State CVM.
