Dr. Schumacher is my go-to for advice on pretty much everything. He is not only the smartest man I know, but also the most humble. I consider it a great privilege to learn from him every day.

- Christopher Caniglia, DVM, DACVS (Large Animal)

There is no better mentor than Jim Schumacher. He has paved the way in equine surgery due to his passion, intelligence, dedication, and prowess. He is an innovator to the core and his knowledge of anatomy is unprecedented. It is amazing to watch his calm as he operates cases most surgeons would fear. He is selfless and kindhearted, and I am truly blessed to know him and forever grateful for his mentorship and friendship.

Dr. Schumacher is a kind, humble person with incredible surgical talent. He went out of his way to ensure that all residents were treated with respect, nurturing their skills.

- Brent Hague, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Schumacher has mentored innumerable equine surgical residents and fellow Diplomates during his career. Few ACVS surgeons have contributed so much to the literature developing new surgical techniques, mentoring colleagues in the fine art of surgery, and being that constant positive factor for residents in training as Dr. Schumacher. We are fortunate to have learned from his insight, logical surgical decision-making process, and the innumerable new surgical techniques he developed for the management of surgical diseases in the horse. Mention what Dr. Schumacher says, and everyone is listening.

So many surgeons, beyond the reach of our College, have prospered in their careers due to his mentorship, availability, and willingness to pay it forward.

- R. Reid Hanson, DVM, DACVS, DACVECC

Anyone who knows Dr. Schumacher will grin when reminded of his self-deprecating nature, yet he was such a brilliant innovator and an absolutely wonderful teacher of colleagues, residents, and students alike. As kind and giving as a person on top of his professional attributes. He taught me to never stop being curious. And to always weigh all options and approaches to any surgical situation, and to have the insight to figure out new and possibly unconventional ways to fix a problem.

- Patricia M. Hogan, VMD, DACVS

Dr. Schumacher trained me as a resident and continues to provide advice on life and patients.

- Christopher R. Johnson, DVM, MS, DACVS

Jim has been ready to answer questions and help me anytime I’ve asked. He’s still mentoring over 30 years after I first met him when I started an internship at TAMU. He is a great resource on many subjects. He would spend hours reviewing manuscripts to help everyone with their publications. He truly wanted everyone that he knew to succeed.

- Scott McClure, DVM, PhD, DACVS

I can't think of anyone more deserving of this recognition than Dr. Jim Schumacher. His contributions in surgery, research, and education are immeasurable.

- Larry David Shamis, DVM, MS

Dr. Schumacher has worked tirelessly to impact the lives of students and residents. It’s astounding the amount of publications and projects he has been a part of and is currently working on. Dr. Schumacher is an excellent surgeon and even better person.
