Honored Mentor
Charles W. Smith (Deceased)
DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr. Smith was a member of the faculty at the University of Illinois during my residency. He was always calm and composed, nothing phased him. He guided his students through the cases. While being supportive, he encouraged residents to think, analyze and make decisions; all these traits are things that I have tried to emulate, as I became a mentor to students and residents at North Carolina State University.

Mentoring veterinary students, interns, and surgery residents is one of the most rewarding experiences that I have been blessed with. Mentoring begins with developing a relationship that is based on a caring attitude, mutual respect, always being available, giving encouragement, providing an atmosphere for learning, and challenging them to develop good surgical skills and judgment. The mentor relationship has given me an opportunity to influence their development and careers. Many have become close and lifelong friends!
