R. John Berg

John was an amazing mentor during my surgical residency, and his words of wisdom and those of humor still resonate with me daily. He taught surgery with great passion and always found a silver lining for any situation. He found strength in teaching his students and cared for his patients immensely. A more wonderful person does not exist.

John was the mentor I wish everyone was fortunate enough to have. He was my biggest supporter both inside and outside of the OR, beginning when I was a student and continuing on into my residency. This has not wavered since. He taught me that talented surgeons are technically skilled in the OR, but the best surgeons are passionate, supportive, and empathetic. He continues to be the surgeon and mentor I aspire to be. He gave me the strength, courage, and skill to be the surgeon I hoped to be. I wouldn’t be a surgeon without him.
